Field Notes

Description:

A female Empusa fasciata mantis (I don't know if there is a common name available for her species), spotted near Kypseli village, Epirus region, Greece...
She was standing on the branch of that clematis vine, near her fresh ootheca, and she seemed pretty upset, having me around :)
Anyway, I just snapped the pics and leaved her alone with her eggs...Isn't she adorable?

Notes:

The genus name Empusa means a "demonic creature, that enters the nightmares of people"...

I'm glad you like it, dear @Bernadette S :) I was always wondering how did the old entimologists choose some of the insect families/genuses and species names...Their knowledge must have been enormous...
Ooooh, yes, that's a much more interesting name now that I know what it means!
Awesome series :)
Dear @Bernadette, I know that this name is given to empusa pennata species...I really like the name Empusa and I think I'll keep it as it is, (it means a "demonic creature, that enters the nightmares of people")... But although the name is a bit scary, the very insect is gorgeous :)
I believe others in this genus are called "Cone-headed Mantis"
