Field Notes

Description:

The AFrican White-winged Collared Dove is medium size dove, mainly grey with a black semi-collar on the backside of the neck. In flight, seen from above, a white crescent wing bar is diagnostic - at rest it is barely seen on edges of folded wings (Photo 3). From close, another diagnostic characteristic is the white feathered eye-ring (seen well on photo 1 and 2).

Habitat:

Near threatened species, found only in Eastern Africa/ Horn of Africa - namely in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. Here, observed several times in urban settings in mainly agro-pastoral area of Oromiya, Borena; in a small town named Hudet. Hudet is located i semi-arid acacia savanna, and is surrounded by agricultural fields - mainly vegetable homegardening.

Notes:

It is considered near threatened because of the small population size and limited range; and is threatened because of habitat loss and destruction.
