Description:

A velvety jet black larva with slightly dorso-ventrally flattened body and a red head. The biggest of the three was about 20 mm long.

Habitat:

Spotted on a rotting eucalyptus log in a nature reserve.
The beetle is found in woodland, forests and heath along the eastern and southern Australain coast and Tasmania.

Notes:

The larvae were very active looking through all cracks and splits in tree bark as if seeking something.
The adults in this genus have varied colours as can be seen in the reference material.
