Field Notes

Description:

One more bird that looks at me in a strange way... This bird is a Burchells Glossy-starling. Eyes are dark and the tail is a bit longer than the previous spotting Cape Glossy Starling. The sun reflects in the feathers of the starling and they can appear almost black as well as bright metallic blue.

Habitat:

Spotted close to Komatiepoort gate in Kruger National Park. Dry season. (open woodland, close to a waterhole)

Notes:

It is found in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The Burchells Glossy-starling eats termites, locusts, centipedes, other insects, small mammals like mice, berries, acacia flowers, and fruit, as well as scraps of human food. Considered pests, humans are their biggest threat. Lifespan 15 to 20 years.
