Field Notes

Description:

Black bear, ~ 2m long on all fours, probably > 2m tall standing on its hind legs.

Habitat:

Sub-arctic forest.

Notes:

Spotted along the Alaska Highway, the second of three black bears spotted along about a two mile stretch of highway. This individual was browsing in roadside grass on the east side of the highway when I stopped my vehicle on the west side. By the time I got out, it had started walking north and went into the roadside ditch, where it disappeared from sight. I walked north along my side, trying to parallel its direction when it re-appeared next to an orange culvert marker just across the pavement. It became aware of me and turned its head for a look, at which time I took posted picture, and retreated to the safety of my vehicle. The bear resumed browsing. As a matter of interest, bears reportedly sometimes den in culverts.
