Field Notes

Description:

A Trachemys scripta pond slider, abandoned/released in Almiros river, Crete island. The species is a popular pet species and unfortunately a lot of people do not want to keep them after they grow, and instead they abandon them in streams, ponds and lakes, where they usually establish and suppress the local endemic turtle species. That particular Red Eared Slider had drifted to the open sea and my daughter Eleni (who spotted it and saved it) relocated it back in the river.
