Field Notes

Description:

Shiny, unmarbled midgreen leaves. Leaves 4–8 in. long, less than half as wide. Stem 6–12 in. with 1 or 2 nodding bright yellow flowers. Flowers lighter-colored at base, petals strongly reflexed, anthers cream to yellow or dark red, longer than pistil. Found blooming just after snowmelt. Similar to white-flowered E. montanum, avalanche lily, in same habitat.

Habitat:

Grows in alpine or subalpine meadows, forest openings, among sagebrush, at mid to high elevations but also low elevations in Columbia River Gorge.

Notes:

Spotted on the Skyline Loop Trail, Mt. Rainier NP.
