Field Notes

Description:

Giant Swallowtail on Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa). An adult's wingspan is about 100–160 mm. The body and wings are dark brown to black with yellow bands. There is a yellow "eye" in each wing tail. The abdomen has bands of yellow along with the previously mentioned brown.

Habitat:

Bent of the River Audubon. In the United States, is mostly seen in deciduous forest and citrus orchards

Gorgeous! The genus name is either Papilio or Heraclides. Heraclides is from a revision of the genus Papilio, which moves some swallowtails to the formerly mentioned genus.
