Field Notes

Description:

This individual may be a juvenile since the grey throat seems to be indicative of immaturity among many species, and its body shape and plumage are less than sleek, unlike most adult hummingbirds. This hummingbird was alone and stayed calmly perched for several minutes.

Habitat:

This bird was perching in a red hibiscus bush (likely Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) at the time the photo was taken, but seems to live in a nearby pine tree just behind my house. This bird, and many other hummingbirds, are present year round.

Notes:

I was very lucky to get such a clear shot of this hummingbird since they rarely perch so low to the ground. The first image is the most clear, but the third shows the iridescent red crown better than the others.
