Field Notes

Description:

The Great Skua breads on coastal moorland in grass nests right on the ground. As a result its chicks are left quite exposed. Like other skuas, it will fly at the head of a human or other intruder approaching the nest. These pictures were taken at Ingólfshöfði, Iceland, part of the largest breeding ground in the world for the Great Skua.

Habitat:

Coastal moorland surrounded by glacial black sand dunes (sandar). Last shot is of habitat.

Notes:

Pictures are of 3 different chicks. These pictures were taken at the long end of a 150-500 mm zoom, at a remote and and respectful distance from the birds.

How SWEET!!! GREAT FIND, Daniele!! ;)
Thanks eelhsamarie! These seemed so exposed and vulnerable in their bare nests... but the parents were fierce guardians (large birds!)
