Field Notes

Description:

A house sparrow is brown on top, streaked with black, and there is a single bold white wingbar. The head has a gray crown, chestnut nape, nd grayish-white cheek. The throat and breast are black and the reast of the underparts are gray.

Habitat:

House sparrows mostly range throughout southern Canada and the entire United States. They live in farmlands, cities, towns, and suburban areas.

Notes:

House sparrows entered North America in the mid 1800s for the purpose of controlling noxious insect pests. Their population quickly grew and soon the birds became agricultural pests themselves.
