Field Notes

Description:

Black fungus with a bumpy top. I found one that looks like it was stepped on and it was white inside (photo 2). If you were to dig it up, you would find the "deer truffle" underground because it parasitizes truffles in the genus Elaphomyces. There were many of these in this spot, at least 30 fruiting bodies in the span of just a couple meters.

Habitat:

Sandy soil at Newnans Lake Conservation Area.
