Field Notes

Description:

The Mourning Doveis a brownish color with dark gray wings. Their long, tapered tail is bordered with large white spots. The male, particularly in spring, has iridescent patches of green and pink on his neck. It is a smaller version of the now extinct passenger pigeon.

Habitat:

The Mourning Dove ranges from southern Canada, south throughout the U.S. to Mexico. Their habitat are in dry uplands, fields, parks, and surburban areas.

Notes:

The Mourning Dove is among the ten most common birds in the United States. The Mourning Dove forages on the ground for seeds from grasses, weeds, and multiple-seeded flowers such as sunflowers. The Mourning Dove will also feed on agricultural grains where available, including wheat, corn, and millet.
