Field Notes

Description:

The blue banded bee is a native of Australia but occasionally may be encountered elsewhere. It's striking appearance is characterized by irridiscent blue bands on its abdomen. The bee moves very fast and hovers, something that honeybees don't do. It is said that blue banded bees are solitary bees and are "buzz" pollinators.
