Field Notes

Description:

It is well documented that young adult Argiope luzona spiders (size <8 mm.) decorate their webs with either a 2-arm or a 4-arm cruciate stabilimentum. They do not create any of the other possible configurations until they are more mature (size >8 mm.). The spider shown here is well over 8 mm. in body length and would, normally, be expected to decorate its web (I think randomly) with any of the possible cruciate stabilimenta. There is a wide range to choose from; 1-arm, 2-arm, 3-arm, 4-arm and 5-arm. They can be continuous, discontinuous or a combination of both. So, it was surprising that this spider seems to be fixated on just one style, the 4-arm, continuous cruciate stabilimentum. The photos shown here, were taken on different days and, as you can see, the decoration is always the same..

Habitat:

This beautiful spider was spotted, on its web, in our backyard. Its web was moored to the trunks of two Banana plants (Musa x paradisiaca L.) locally known throughout the Philippines as "Saging", but called "Batag", in the local dialect of our area. Plant information from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Saging.....
