Field Notes

Description:

Not entirely sure if this is a butterfly or a day flying moth. Body length approximately 2.5 cm mostly brown insect, with distinctive white flashes on the underside of the wings, and yellow/brown markings on the upper/open face of the wings. Seems to rest with wings partly open, hence my confusion about butterfly or moth

Habitat:

Perennial flower border and rose beds in large urban garden. Photographed resting on a day lily, but often seen on roses and many other flowers
