Description:

Reddish-brown about an inch long. It can wiggle, it was found "under the dirt" by kids.

It is weird looking ! Unfortunately someone released it so we will never know it was going to turn into
You guys are right! I just searched it on Google Images and you're right. I didn't think moth pupae would be found in the ground, but I guess I am too used to butterflies!
Looks like a moth pupa to me..... :) They can often wiggle the abdominal segments quite vigorously.
