Elm sawfly
Cimbex americana
42.6512, -73.755
Field Notes
Description:
The largest North American sawfly. Curls up when at rest or threatened.
Habitat:
Found this in a wetland feeding on Salix amygdaloides. I tried giving it Salix nigra but it wouldn't take. It will eat Salix discolor however.
Notes:
The elm sawfly over winters as pupae and have only one generation per year, so I will have to wait until next year to see the adult.
