Field Notes

Description:

Medium brown cap approx. 3 to 4" across. Short pink stipe with deep ribbing.
Growing in the depression where a large Hemlock tree had been ripped out including it's roots. Growing right in the sandy, rocky soil. There were 4 of these fungi.

Habitat:

Conifer forest of mainly Western Hemlock, Western Redcedar, and Fir. Understory of Oregon Grape and Salal with moss.

Notes:

The closest I can come to an ID is Gyromitra californica.

Found along the hiking trail to Radium Lake.

Thanks Kathleen. I thought it was strange that the only place these fungi were growing was in the bottom of a hole left by an uprooted Hemlock tree.
Thanks Elaine. The stipe is certainly more colourful than the cap.
