Field Notes

Description:

This small fly was Breathtaking! It looked to be made of solid gold. It was about 8 mm long and wanted the salt on our skin. Family Tachinidae.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.

Notes:

Speaking of Golden Flies.....in Ancient Egypt a Golden Fly was one of the highest honors that a Pharaoh could bestow on his subjects and was especially used for rewarding valor in military personnel. The last picture shows 3 of these golden flies from the Museum of Anthropology in Cairo. They are quite obviously Horseflies of the Family Tabanidae. These are from the era of Ramses II. I think if they had ever seen this Golden Tachinid they would have changed their style!
