Wild Turkey

There must be turkeys on all the islands where they were introduced, then, just more in some places than others. It was interesting to research how in the world turkeys got to Hawaii in the first place, because they can fly only short distances ... so you begin with the idea that someone must have taken them there. The next thing to look into would be what effect they've had on local species and ecosystems in 50 years. Hmm ... cool spotting!

I read that the turkeys in Hawaii trace back to about 400 wild-trapped Rio Grande turkeys imported from South Texas from 1961 to 1963. They were released on six of the major islands, doing best on Hawaii, Molokai and Lanai, especially in dry habitats. Supposedly, they didn't do as well on Oahu ... because it's wetter? Is your turkey in a park, maybe? At any rate, gobble-gobble!
