Field Notes

Description:

Said to be the smallest bird in the United States. Fast and fearless with a green crown to the tail. Flanks light cinnamon color. The throat is white with long curved pink feathers that flare out when it is courting or threatening. Very territorial and will chase off larger birds. I witnessed some chase off a Cooper's hawk and Red-tailed. Even joined with a House Wren to chase off a California Scrub Jay.

Habitat:

These are the smallest long distance migrating birds. It goes from Mexico to the nest in the Pacific Northwest. Found feeding in a canyon on Black sage and Indian Paintbrush flowers.
