Field Notes
Description:
Masai Giraffes are the largest subspecies of giraffe and the tallest land mammal. The long neck of giraffes results from a disproportionate lengthening of the cervical vertebrae, not from the addition of more vertebrae. This lengthening takes place after birth.
Habitat:
Kenya and Tanzania savannas, grasslands and open woodlands.
Notes:
Photo taken at San Diego Zoo.
