Everyone can do extensive ID research. You don't have to be a ranger! Haha
That's why Chun is a Ranger :-)!! Thanks a lot for your intense research!
Hi there, thank you for the new information, I've amended the spotting.
Finally got the species! This is a Hemithyrsocera vittata. I went through all the 70 Hemithyrsocera species on cockroach.speciesfile.org and turns out only Hemithyrsocera vittata matches the distribution which includes both Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia where the "Gold-bordered Cockroach" occur. Seems like in quite a lot of website they have also correctly identify this species. http://cockroach.speciesfile.org/Common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=1175037 https://inaturalist.ca/taxa/764984-Hemithyrsocera-vittata/browse_photos
Hi everyone, this species is actually NOT a Hemithyrsocera histrio. I used to think this is a Hemithyrsocera histrio too but then I finally found the real Hemithyrsocera histrio. Here is my spotting for comparison: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/289777174 I notice that a lot of photographs in the Internet are indeed misidentified and are called Gold-bordered Cockroach. However, if you look closely at the specimen photos of this species, you can actually see the difference in the antennae - being feathery and having a white middle part. On the thorax you can also see an extra line in the middle. Valid specimen photos are available on cockroach.speciesfile.org: link: http://cockroach.speciesfile.org/Common/basic/ShowImage.aspx?TaxonNameID=1174980&ImageID=178574 The distribution info also does not support it. When I first saw the distribution info of the Hemithyrsocera histrio which includes Borneo, I was surprised as there are a lot of photos of this "Gold-bordered Cockroach" on the Internet and I am still not able to find it all over Borneo or any photos of it from Borneo. From the available photos of the Gold-bordered Cockroach, it seems that it is distributed only from Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia which does not match the wider distribution of the real Hemithyrsocera histrio then.
Common name is Gold Bordered Cockroach.
Thank you StefanPhalagorn & bayucca. Amended spotting. Sorry for the delay ...
Viv, Stefan is correct. It shoud be Hemithyrsocera histrio, Hemithyrsocera lateralis is a junior synonym and should be replaced by Hemithyrsocera histrio. You may add Hemithyrsocera lateralis in the description section as well or add a tag for both of them. http://blattodea.speciesfile.org/Common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=1174980
Hemithyrsocera lateralis / Blatta lateralis Serville, 1838 is synonymous with Hemithyrsocera histrio (Burmeister, 1838).
It is about time that the cockroach gets a renaissance! There are so many beautiful species, many of them can be found here in PN! Perhaps this is a good theme for a new blog post! Your find is a beauty!
Thanks for the ident bayucca ... quite attractive for a Cockroach!
