I had no idea about that food coloring trick. I'll have to try that.
If you get a chance to look again be sure to notice the very dark purple single flower in the middle of the big white flower. Also pick a few and put them in a vase with food coloring. Pretty good plant for seeing the color get pulled right into the flower and change it to any color you want. When I was a little kid I was shown these things and thought they were interesting. May not be so exciting for you I suppose.
