Field Notes

Description:

Inch long flying beetle. Beautiful metallic green thorax. The wings were striped tan. The head was also metallic green. Sounded like a loud bee buzzing by when I initially heard it.

Habitat:

These beetles are found from Maine to Georgia and as far West as California. This beetle was found in our garden in Grand Island, Nebraska at 565 masl

Notes:

This is my first spotting. If anyone can confirm the classification of this beetle I would appreciate the help.

Nice first spotting Watson5. I look forward to many more :-) Thanks for sharing and welcome to PN.
Thank you for the welcome and confirmation of the bug identification! Nice to know we're on the right track here. We're looking forward to adding more spottings.
Looks right to me and known range is good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotinis_nitida https://bugguide.net/node/view/520/data
Based on location and hind leg coloration I think you have the correct ID. It is possible that it is Cotinis mutabilis, but I think based on location and features nitida is more likely. See identification notes here https://bugguide.net/node/view/520 and here: https://bugguide.net/node/view/29926
