Field Notes

Description:

The Great eastern egret is an elegant bird that has a wing span of up to nearly five feet when an adult. It has white feathers, a yellow bill, and black feet.

Notes:

While sitting on my dock in the morning, I first saw this egret fly across our cove from right to left above Lake Trant and disappear into some trees. For a couple years, one area across from out dock has been frequented by several blue herons. So I set up in hopes that the egret would appear; am within ten minutes, it flew around the corner of some trees toward me and landed on a partially submerged tree trunk. Egrets, together with blue herons, are among some of nature's most elegant birds. This is the first egret that I have seen on that part of our lake this year.
