Unknown fungus that looks like a clam!

Habitat:

Upland mixedwood forest.

Hi Gordon, I cannot recall whether the birch was dead, or not. Based on the pictures, my best guess would be that it was. I was not leaning towards Piptoporus spp., though – their morphologies are slightly different, or so it seems... I am considering Fomes fomentarius. What do you think?
Was the birch it was growing on dead? I think what you have here is one of the polypores, possibly Piptoporus betulinus. Take a look at http://www.mushroomexpert.com/piptoporus_betulinus.html and see what you think.
