Field Notes

Description:

small, fan-shaped, dry, papery, overlapping brackets-- about 1/2 to 3/4 inches wide. Zoned brown and off-white. Undersurface smooth with no visible pores.

Habitat:

covering many dead branches and logs in Prospect Park, Brooklyn

Notes:

Could be Stereum hirsutum, I suppose, but the resemblance of these brackets to the photo in the Audubon guide for S. complicatum is pretty dead on.
