Field Notes

Description:

I found her laying eggs in the driveway. I placed a tomato plant wire cylinder around the nest and tied on bright ribbons to let people know to avoid it. I observed the nest for roughly 70 days. No hatchlings emerged.

Habitat:

Forest with bodies of water semi-near.

Thank you for your suggestion, Jeff. The nearest body of water is roughly 0.6 miles away. I have received another recommendation that she is a Pseudemys floridana (Coastal plain cooter), which seems to be a bit more on target because of the coloration of what I saw of her plastron. Thanks again, and happy spotting!
This is a great sighting. I have been around western pond turtles a long time and have only seen one nest! How far was the nest from aquatic habitat?
This is just a suggested ID. The carapace texture looks very similar to that seen in a photo on the reference site; however, this reference suggests that this species may not occur on the Florida panhandle.
