Field Notes

Description:

Striking large wader, completely white with an orange bill and black legs. Much sleeker and more svelte than the great blue heron. It has a thinner neck and thinner, more dagger-like bill. Can stand motionless for a long time, striking when prey passes by. They are colonial nesters.

Habitat:

Found by a man-made pond in a golf course in Orlando, FL.

Notes:

Much more shy than the great blue heron, and was chased away by it. They both made calls to each other, but in the end the heron seemed much more aggressive than the egret. Pic 4 shows it flying off!
