Field Notes

Description:

Geitoneura klugii, also known as the "common xenica" or "Klug's xenica", is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. They are often called "brush-footed butterflies" or "four-footed butterflies" because they only have four 'walking' legs, while the other two are curled up in front. In some species, these forelegs have a brush-like set of hairs, and this gives rise to the other common names. These brushes are used to clean its face, antennae and proboscis. It took me several attempts just to get a couple of photos - a pocket camera has its limitations, and butterflies dislike me! More information about this species can be found a spotting I made 2 years ago, also at Girraween.... https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/221557933

Habitat:

Found in bushland near the freshwater Dingo Swamp, Girraween National Park, SEQ. This one was spotted flying amongst the bushes and tall grasses before coming to rest in leaf litter along the side of the track. Good rainfall the night before, so the butterflies I saw were pretty active. Here's some park info - http://www.rymich.com/girraween/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girraween_National_Park
