Field Notes

Description:

Deep brown velvet discs with pale thin margins and a dark woody stipe. The caps had a central depression with the satiny hairs arranged in concentric rings on the surface. The largest of caps were about 30mm wide.
The underside showed large pores and was stained a yellow-brown, the colour of spores.

Habitat:

Spotted amongst damp decaying leaf debris along the edge of a walking track. The track was in a nature reserve with mixed native trees.
Probably arising from decaying subsurface wood.

Notes:

A mycorrhizal Polypore. Have been wanting to spot these for a long time now !
