Field Notes

Description:

The Zebra Top is a periwinkle, a marine gastropod. This fellow was making his way back to the rock pools as the tide receded. The late afternoon light highlights the trail left behind in the sand. NB: The appearance of legs in these photos is an illusion. This is not a crab, but a snail. The apparent legs are merely the distorted reflection of the pine trees further up the beach. Pretty cool eh?

Habitat:

Ocean rock pools at North Avoca Beach.

Notes:

Beautifully crystal-clear seawater on the now receding tide.
