Field Notes

Description:

Cap diameter: 3-4 inches
Initially ovoid or hemispherical before convex and finally flat. The surface is smooth, and the margins striated. color orange-red. Gills pale to golden yellow.

Stem
Diameter 2-3 cm, Height: 8-15 cm
Cylinder-shaped, pale to golden yellow. The base of the stipe is thicker than the top.

Ring
Large, falling, membranous, streaked, golden-yellow color.

Volva
White, persistent, smooth, fleshy and free to the stem.

Smell
Faint and delicate

Season: summer to autumn

Edible: Excellent but some say not as good as its European counterpart the true Caesar's Mushroom.

Habitat:

open deciduous woodland, especially with oaks, in warm regions. This one was surrounded by Post Oaks.

I'm not sure Amanita caesarea occurs in North America. I think this would be Amanita jacksonii.
