Field Notes

Description:

The wasp was over 1 inch long. It has black wings with a red body. Body segment appear to show dark striping. The Wasp is a very active feeder flying from one leafy plant area to another. It perches with its wings open (Pix 1). When on the ground the wings are folded (Pix2).
It took me 4 days and many bug bites to get Pix1. Then I lucked out on another day when I was photographing a wolf spider.

Habitat:

Grass, natural plant (weeds) field with nearby trees. The field provides the insect food. The wasp uses tree material and builds nests in the trees.

Notes:

Naming based on research in bug guide.
Careful with bug guide. Make sure that an 'expert' has validated a classification. I have found errors that are easily checked by researching the provided name and finding out that the characteristics of the provided name do not match the characteristics of the photo.
