Field Notes

Description:

Very large looking fly (robber fly) with large long wings, similar to a cicada. The thorax is furry and the black eyes are large and have quite a separation. The tail is long-ish and tapered to a small tip, terminating in what looks like a claw or similar to a dragonfly, except significantly bigger. The legs are beige in color and end in spiky dark feet.

Habitat:

Spotted above eye-level in a muscadine vine and looked to be sunning. The area is densely packed with mainly pine but there are some hardwoods. In all it is a dark and moist habitat with standing water all year long..

Notes:

My friend is currently surveying the property for purchase and invited us to hike and document the birds, butterflies, fungi, and wildlife. Great day to be outside and helping others ID common species in the area.
