These ants have a distinct red thorax and black abdomen and head.
Formica aquilonia is included on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List of threatened species

Habitat:

Woodlands.

Interesting. I don't think we have any ants in the States that build with material from the forest floor. Sorry to hear they're on the Red List ... what's the problem?
