Field Notes

Description:

Small tortoiseshell butterfly with reddish orange and yellow colouration. It was very small, maybe about 2-3cm in size.

Habitat:

Found mainly in Europe and Asia but in decline for unknown reasons.

Notes:

Very small tortoiseshell butterfly, resting on the ground outside our house in England for about 5 minutes before it flew away. My son identified it as they had just done a unit on butterflies of Europe in school.
