Field Notes

Description:

Looks like a fllower, doesn't it?

Habitat:

In a garden attached to an urban house. This was under a Hibiscus plant and the land had been fertilized with cowdung.

Notes:

I have understood from suggestions and questions on PN that the under-surface of a mushroom holds precious clues to its identity. This was close to the ground and I tried to bend the stalk but it snapped. I replaced it where I found it...and cursed my clumsiness.

You're most welcome. I forget if it was my brilliant idea or if someone suggested it to me. Regardless, it works beautifully, and I find it particularly handy for photos :-)
Neil Ross...what a wonderful, elegant and simple solution. Of course!!! Thanks...I would never have thought of it in a million years...and to think I had my compact case (with a mirror) in my bag....Thanks.
That's a very handsome-looking mushroom, Sakanya. Even now I find it difficult to manhandle fungi, as it were. Most are very delicate, and the times when I've damaged them I have cursed my clumsiness also, and then felt very guilty afterwards about 'killing it'. A solution to this is to purchase a small mirror (or if you have an old makeup compact, use that). You can then peep underneath without feeling all the guilt. I've only just started to use one, and I feel so much better.
