Field Notes

Description:

This large green iguana has not changed it color to the typical summer green. The first photo is a close-up that shows its forked, two-color tongue.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton, FL

Notes:

I was surprised to see that an iguana has a "forked" or, more properly, notched tongue that has smooth and rougher textured sections and two different colors. The iguana had its mouth open during most of its visit which could be because it was very hot. It spent some time eating the new grass shoots and the flowers in grass.

Is there an easy way to tell an iguana male from a female without getting too close for comfort?
