Field Notes

Description:

20 - 60 cm tall. One tall nodding purple/red to green flower 5 - 7 cm wide. The flower can be seen in the Georgian Bay area from May to August. The leaves are the "pitchers" of the plant, and grow to be 10 - 30 cm tall. Because of the nutrient-poor soil of wetlands, pitcher-plants have evolved into carnivorous plants. Insects are lured into the leaf unable to escape due to downward-pointing hairs on the inside of the leaf. By excreting enzymes, the plant is then able to digest the insect and receive nutrients.

Habitat:

Found in wetland environments all through Canada and down into South-East United States.

Notes:

This pitcher plant was found while paddling Killarney Lake in the entrance to a little bay found near the Freeland-Killarney portage.
