Field Notes

Description:

This is Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon citratus) which is widespread in the Philippines, where it has been introduced from its native Malaysia. It is generally planted in gardens, here, to be used as a flavouring in a number of dishes, but mainly pork and chicken. In stuartxchange.com it is clearly stated that it is always planted and never spontaneous in the Philippines. I would normally never disagree with Dr. Stuart (the owner of stuartxchange), but the clump of Lemon Grass shown here is in an unusual place and when I asked everyone who planted it there, nobody can remember having planted it. Spontaneous? I can't be sure, but I do know that it can turn an ordinary bowl of chicken soup into Arroz Caldo (Filipino chicken and rice soup), a feast fit for a king. I will enjoy that for dinner, this evening.

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard, in a rather dark and shaded patch of rough ground, between a stand of banana plants and a concrete wall.

Notes:

The Name for Lemon Grass in Tagalog (the National language of the Philippines), is Salai.
