Red-rumped Swallow; Golondrina Daurica
Cecropis daurica
39.6793, -0.670331
Field Notes
Description:
The Red-rumped Swallow differs from the Barn Swallow in that it has a black vent, a white throat, and a Reddish-white forehead, cheeks, nape and rump. The rump can often appear white in flight making it look like a House Martin but the tail streamers help so separate it from that species.
During summer both species are present here and often mix together, but in September the Barn Swallows leave for southern Africa while many Red-rumped Swallows will remain in the southern Iberian peninsula.
Pictures 2-4 show the Red-rumped Swallow on the right with Barn Swallows on the left.
Habitat:
Garden on limestone outcrop in foothills of los Serranos mountains.
