Field Notes

Description:

Small black flying beetle-like bug, approx. an inch long (not counting antenna.)

Habitat:

Mountain foothills near water and forested area

Notes:

We left my windows cracked in my vehicle while we ran to a local ranch to have a bite to eat. While we ate lunch it rained lightly, but not enough for me to roll up my window.

When we returned to my truck, happy and fed, we started back up the road to our cabin. Suddenly, we were panicked to find one of these bugs on the passenger seat. We pulled over and let the little guy out, only to realize we had 3 more in the truck! We screamed and laughed and tried to keep my dog from eating them! We successfully released the little stowaways and went on our merry way! I would love to know what these guys are!

Species ID Suggestions

Thank you Luis! We are pretty bug-centric, but when big black bugs start flying around in confined spaces...you tend to panic! You are absolutely correct on the ID! Thank you! Unfortunately they are an introduced specie!
Good story Emily, LOL. It looks like a longhorn beetle.
