Thanks all. My opinion is we humans, in our infinite curiosity... unintentionally intrude. We get too close. Closer than this mother felt comfortable with. Sad day all around for the moose, the calves, the gentleman who shot the moose and the two children who saw the shooting.
Beautiful and precious but truly tragic... :,,(
Very sad story all the way around! The mother looked very thin to begin with. She obviously thought the man and his family was a threat. I think he was justified in taking the moose's life. Not sure I would have made the same decision though. However, I also wonder if her charging the family was also due to her weakened state, maybe she was sick or just thin from nursing calves. Perhaps she felt vulnerable. ...I don't know, just thinking out loud...
Here is one of the news articles. One calf was never seen again. They tried to catch the other for weeks. I'm not sure if they ever caught it.... http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20130612/park-service-not-seeking-charges-against-man-who-shot-denali-moose
Why would somebody do such a stupid thing? To a mother with babies? It breaks my heart... Do you know what happened to the calves?
