Description:
The Common Eider is is the largest duck in the Northern Hemisphere. The female's camouflaged striped brown plumage (shots1-3, 4 with ducklings) contrasts with the white, black, and green breeding plumage of the male (shot 5). These stocky ducks are also noticeable for their wedge-shaped head and long bill.
Habitat:
Laguna and marsh area on the South coast of Iceland. Last shot shows the colony and some of the habitat.
Notes:
Eider ducks are colonial breeders, and their colonies can range in size from less than 100 birds to thousands of individuals.
