Field Notes

Notes:

Strange insects similar to male ants with wings, with length circa 2.5cm, three or four of them were busy sucking honey and apparently turned no interest towards me, which granted me the chance to snap a photo close enough. Their exoskeleton, especially the wings reflect as blue in the sunshine.

Species ID Suggestions

It looks like this http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/36394153 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphex_pensylvanicus but I‘m not sure.
I think the antennae and abdomen are different from Chalybion californicum. Also, C. californicum's range is North America. Pls. verify. http://www.discoverlife.org/20/q?search=Chalybion+californicum
It looks very much the same as Scolia soror or Discolia soror. But I could not find a record of this species outside Australia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scolia_soror
