Burrowing Big-headed Ground Beetle
16.7131, -92.6126
Field Notes
Description:
A Ground Beetle of 1.5 cm in length. The short, wide mandibles have 2 large teeth. The antennae are not elbowed nor clubbed and the basal 4 segments are red. The first segment however is very long. The elytra are striated. The prothorax has a median groove. The front femora are modified for digging. Family Carabidae, subfamily Scaritinae, Tribe Scaritini.
Habitat:
On the ground in the street at night, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico 2,200 meters.
Notes:
This was one weird Carabid to find! It almost looks more like a Passalid with misplaced antennae. These burrow in search of their prey, thus the large digging front femora.
