Field Notes

Description:

This is a cluster mushroom about 6 inches across. The caps are tan in color and have white gills. Gymnopus conains about 300 species. After research on the images of gymnopus I found a picture which was very similar to this spotting but it had not been verified (other than the gymnopus family) so unable to identify this spotting other than put it into the gymnopus series.

Habitat:

There were 4 of these cluster mushrooms along the road edge next to the wooded forest. Three of them were almost covered with dead leaves and pine needles. I spotted this one first. Pocomoke River State Park, Pocomoke City, Maryland.

Notes:

I have looked through several mushroom field guides on various websites plus the National Audubon Society Field Guide to Mushrooms.

Perhaps a Gymnopus sp.

Thanks Mark. You are right, it is not a "cauliflower" Mushroom identification is difficult but really enjoy finding them. Each one is unique.

Fabulous looking clumps. Love that sci name too. Possibly a couple of ID problems?? .. they should be all branching from a common base.. these seem to be separate caps overlapping... there should be no distinctive gills just flat lobes with pores... http://northernbushcraft.com/mushrooms/cauliflowerMushroom/notes.htm
